One of the greatest careers in Alabama football history came to an end on Monday night as kicker Will Reichard played his last game in a Crimson Tide uniform. Despite a valiant effort, Alabama suffered a 27-20 overtime loss to the Michigan Wolverines in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.
Reichard, who returned for a record-setting fifth season, concluded his career with two successful kicks. In the second quarter, he blasted a 50-yard field goal through the uprights after Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe was sacked on third down. Later in the game, on what was supposed to be Alabama’s decisive drive, Reichard nailed a 52-yard attempt, equaling his career-long and giving Alabama a 20-13 lead.
In the aftermath of the defeat, an emotional Reichard reflected on his time at Alabama and the impact it had on him. It’s meant the world. I mean, playing for Alabama, having that ‘A’ on my chest, you couldn’t ask for a better experience with the biggest brand in college football. It’s been an honor playing here for sure, he said.
Reichard’s journey started in 2019 when he arrived on campus, marking the beginning of a remarkable five-year run that completely transformed the perception of Alabama kickers. Winning the starting job in 2019, Reichard did not miss a single kick in 2020, led the SEC in 2021, secured Alabama’s first game-winning kick in 17 years in 2022, and set the Tide record for 50-yard field goals with 10 this season.
Notably, Reichard also holds the record for the most points scored by a college football player, with an impressive total of 547 points. The next closest active player is Brayden Narveson of North Carolina State, who has accumulated 409 points.
Reichard quickly became a fan favorite during his time at Hoover High School, and that support carried on throughout his college career. His head coach, Nick Saban, had unwavering confidence in him, even during challenging moments. When Reichard missed a couple of kicks against Kentucky in November, Saban reiterated his trust in the talented kicker, saying, When we start telling guys like Will Reichard how to do what he does, it probably can mess him up more than it can help him.
Indeed, Saban has always recognized Reichard’s exceptional abilities. Back in August, he stated, Will’s been as good a college kicker over the last 2-3 years as anybody could ever ask for.
Reichard’s journey now continues as he prepares for the next chapter of his football career. He has opted to participate in the Senior Bowl, where he hopes to impress NFL scouts and representatives. With an impressive 22 out of 25 field goal attempts in 2023, including some punting duties due to James Burnip’s injury at Texas A&M, Reichard has demonstrated his versatility and skill set.
Looking ahead, Conor Talty will step into the place-kicking role for Alabama next season. Reichard and Talty shared an emotional hug in the locker room, symbolizing the torch being passed on.
As we bid farewell to Will Reichard, the Alabama faithful will forever cherish his contributions and the legacy he leaves behind. His impact on the program transcends statistics, and his dedication to the Alabama Crimson Tide will always be remembered.
In a sport where success is often defined by touchdowns and big plays, Will Reichard’s excellence as a kicker has elevated the importance and appreciation of his position. A true Alabama legend, he has solidified his place in the storied history of Crimson Tide football.
