Airbnb CEO, Brian Chesky, has predicted that artificial intelligence (AI) will propel millions of new startups rather than replace jobs. Chesky believes that AI will enable those with existing jobs to be more efficient, with engineers at his company expected to be 30% more productive in the next year, without the tax of more people. While this could result in fewer available roles for job seekers, Chesky believes it is ultimately positive in terms of creating more robust job markets and making it easier for people to build their own companies. In contrast, some, including Warren Buffett, remain sceptical about the impact of AI. Last month, AI pioneers, including OpenAI and Google DeepMind, claimed in a letter that the technology poses a risk to humanity’s existence if left to expand without regulation.
