Auto manufacturers in India will soon be required to install air conditioning systems inside driver cabins of trucks, according to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. The decision comes after the minister recognized that truck drivers operate in harsh temperatures of up to 47 degrees Celsius, and that it is important for their health and wellbeing that they are properly cared for. The minister noted that he had been keen to introduce the new regulations ever since he became a minister but had faced opposition, with some people saying that the cost of trucks would increase. Gadkari spoke about the reduction in logistics costs, which he said needs to happen in order for India to improve its export competitiveness. To this end, he stressed that good quality roads and trucks are key. India has a shortage of truck drivers, and as a result, many of them work for 14-16 hours a day with no restrictions, unlike in some other countries.
