The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is eager to send its national team, led by captain Sunil Chhetri, to the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. However, the AIFF’s participation hinges on receiving clearance from the sports ministry. During the 2018 Jakarta Games, the national football team was denied permission to participate. The sports ministry’s guidelines state that only teams ranked in the top eight in Asia are eligible to compete.
Under Croatian coach Igor Stimac, the national team has recently entered the sub-100 club in FIFA rankings. This achievement follows their triumphant performance in the SAFF Championship, where they secured victories against Lebanon and Kuwait.
The AIFF’s optimism about being able to send its team to the Asian Games stems from their current ranking of 18th in Asia. They hope that the sports ministry will grant them the necessary clearance to showcase their skills on the continental stage.
If approved, this will mark the first time that the AIFF sends its senior national team to compete in the Asian Games. The opportunity to compete against formidable opponents in the tournament would provide valuable experience for the Indian football team and further boost the sport’s popularity in the country.
The AIFF and football enthusiasts across India eagerly await the sports ministry’s decision, hoping to witness their national team’s participation in the prestigious Asian Games.
