Hackers and propagandists are now utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to carry out cyber attacks, create deceptive phishing emails, and spread misinformation, according to Sami Khoury, the head of Canada’s Centre for Cyber Security. While Khoury did not provide specific evidence, his statement highlights the growing concern over the adoption of AI by cybercriminals. Numerous cyber watchdog groups have previously warned about the potential risks associated with AI, especially large language models (LLMs) that use extensive text data to craft convincing dialogue and documents. Europol and Britain’s National Cyber Security Centre have both expressed concerns about the misuse of LLMs to impersonate individuals or organizations and aid in cyberattacks. Cybersecurity researchers have even discovered suspected AI-generated content in the wild, such as a malicious LLM trained to draft convincing emails requesting cash transfers. Khoury acknowledges that the use of AI for malicious purposes is still in the early stages, but the rapid evolution of AI models makes it difficult to anticipate their full potential before they are released. The possibility of future AI innovations in cybercrime remains uncertain, but experts urge vigilance. As the cyber landscape continues to evolve, it is vital for organizations and individuals to stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect against AI-driven threats.
