The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is helping to facilitate the safe spiritual journey of Hajj pilgrims. The Hajj pilgrimage is considered one of the largest gatherings in the world, and with the implementation of special and advanced technologies, AI can assist in crowd control, prevent serious health issues and ease communication during the ritual.
Approximately 2-3 million people attend the Hajj pilgrimage each year, and AI can play a significant role in crowd control by analyzing data from different devices such as surveillance cameras, mobile devices, and social media. By monitoring crowd congestion points and density, AI provides alerts to stewards for potential stampede risks, which help in efficient crowd control and provide safety to pilgrims.
This year, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has used AI robots for monitoring the positions of the pilgrims, disinfecting surrounding areas of the holiest sites and guiding Muslims in the correct direction in multiple languages. An AI expert, Dr. Jassim Haji, revealed how AI improves the safety of a demanding and complex process regarding safety measures.
Dr. Jassim said that not only AI and unique technologies help ensure crowd control, but AI can also assist in decision-making. Based on previous data collected, the quota of pilgrims at any given point can be predicted by providing insights into the requirements of safety and security measures.
The implementation of AI in the Hajj pilgrimage ensures the safety of the pilgrims and streamlines the process, making it much easier. With the help of AI, the Hajj pilgrimage is now better organized, safer, and more secure.
