Three African startups have been awarded the Africa Tech Awards at the Viva Technology conference in Paris. The awards recognized climate tech firm Kubik, Cameroon-based healthcare platform Waspito, and Nigerian AI-powered platform Curacel for their contributions to innovation and sustainability. The recognition comes as the African startup economy experiences unprecedented growth since the COVID-19 pandemic. According to data from Partech, African tech startups raised $6.5 billion in funding in 2020, indicating a 8% YoY growth. Hard-to-recycle plastic waste is used by Kubik to construct low-carbon, affordable buildings, while Waspito offers online consultations, medicine delivery, and more to bring quality healthcare to Africa. Curacel uses artificial intelligence to automate the insurance claims process while detecting fraud. The startups were selected from over 300 entries at the prestigious global tech conference. The African startup ecosystem is becoming a significant source of foreign direct investment on the continent, with more companies beginning to gain recognition on the global stage.
