In recent years, West Bengal has seen some of the most gruesome murders that have shocked the public. But what’s more ghastly than the murders themselves is the actions taken after the fact in an attempt to cover up the crimes. Suspects have been known to chop up the bodies of their victims into pieces and dispose of them in various locations. Some recent examples include the murder of Renuka Khatun, whose husband Md Ansarul killed her in December of last year and then dumped her body parts in a canal. In another case, Ujjwal Chakraborty’s wife and son chopped his body into five pieces and disposed of them in plastic sacks in various locations. And in a third case, Manua arranged for her extramarital lover to kill her husband in order to avoid being implicated in his murder. These actions may seem incomprehensible, but they often fall under the category of crimes of passion. In such cases, the initial murder may be an impulsive act, but the follow-up actions suggest a deeper psychological motive, such as a desire to prolong an association with the victim. Such cases are difficult to analyze from a strictly legal standpoint, as they involve complex psychological factors. Despite the severity of the crimes, the accused often do not feel remorse for their actions, and instead try to justify them.
