Ace Indian footballer Sunil Chhetri celebrated his 39th birthday on Thursday. Known as one of the country’s greatest footballers, Chhetri has made significant contributions both domestically and internationally throughout his career. With an impressive tally of 92 goals in 142 international matches, he ranks fourth among the highest international goal scorers worldwide, standing alongside iconic names like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Chhetri began his professional journey with the City Club Delhi in 2001-02 before joining Mohun Bagan in 2002, where he scored eight goals in 18 matches. Over the years, he has played for various clubs including JCT, East Bengal, Dempo, Chirag United, Mohun Bagan, Churchill Brothers, and Bengaluru. Notably, Chhetri had stints abroad with the Kansas City Wizards in the USA’s Major League Soccer and Portugal’s Sporting CP, which further refined his skills as a well-rounded striker. Throughout his club career, he has achieved numerous accolades and team victories, including I-League titles and other notable cup triumphs.

In addition to his club achievements, Chhetri has had an illustrious international career. He represented India in age group levels from 2004-07 before making his senior debut in June 2005 against arch-rivals Pakistan, where he scored a goal on his debut. As a testament to his significant contribution to Indian football, Chhetri has guided the national team to victories in the AFC Challenge Cup, SAFF Championships, Nehru Cup, and Intercontinental Cup. Under his leadership, India also won the Tri-Nations Cup in 2023.

Chhetri’s outstanding performances have earned him numerous individual honors throughout the years. He has been named the All India Football Federation (AIFF) Player of the Year seven times and has also been honored with the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2011 and the Khel Ratna award in 2021, the highest sporting honor in India.

Currently, all eyes are on Chhetri as he prepares to represent India in the Asian Games held in China from September 23 to October 8. As the team’s captain, Chhetri is expected to lead India to podium glory and raise the tricolor high at the continental level.
