OpenAI’s GPT-4 Raises Concerns About Biased Content Moderation

OpenAI’s latest language model, GPT-4, has sparked concerns regarding biased content moderation. The organization recently advocated for the use of GPT-4 in the field of content moderation, which has raised apprehensions about increased censorship.

GPT-4 represents the most advanced version of OpenAI’s large language model, known as an AI interface. The earlier iteration of this model, ChatGPT, faced criticism due to its evident left-wing bias, as revealed through research conducted on the product.

Regrettably, OpenAI’s blog post on August 15, which explains how GPT-4 can be employed for content moderation, fails to assure the removal of biases. The post discusses the customization of content moderation models for individual platforms, thereby incorporating these platforms’ inherent biases into the moderation process. Moreover, OpenAI acknowledges the potential for bias, stating that the judgments made by language models can be influenced by unintended biases that may have been introduced during the training phase.

At present, the automatic systems utilized by major tech platforms to censor content have proven to be unreliable, and it remains uncertain whether GPT-4 would possess the ability to understand context and nuanced information any better. For instance, previously, Facebook rejected ads for a Holocaust movie titled Beautiful Blue Eyes, citing a policy violation related to content that includes direct or indirect assertions or implications about a person’s race. However, upon human review, these ads were eventually approved.

In another instance on Twitter, also known as X during former CEO Jack Dorsey’s tenure, the platform unreasonably censored tweets that referred to the favorite Clint Eastwood movie, Hang ‘Em High. The automated systems used for censorship failed to distinguish between posts containing hateful language and posts aiming to shed light on such content.

A prime case in point was the Trans Day of Vengeance. When users on Twitter began highlighting the organization of this event, every mention of it was eventually removed, including accounts critical of the event that faced temporary account restrictions. Once again, it became evident that the current algorithms for censorship lack contextual comprehension.

AI models have demonstrated their inability to produce unbiased outcomes and their struggle to consider context effectively. Consequently, employing them for content moderation purposes might not be the ideal solution. Instead, it is imperative to cease the censorship of free speech altogether.

In conclusion, OpenAI’s GPT-4 has sparked concerns regarding biased content moderation. The existing automated systems utilized by major tech platforms for censorship have proven to be unreliable, raising doubts about GPT-4’s ability to address context and nuance adequately. Moving forward, it is crucial to find alternatives that ensure fair content moderation without compromising the principles of free speech.
