India’s cabinet has approved a revival package worth $10.79 billion for state-run telecommunications company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), marking a major boost for the operator. The decision follows BSNL’s recent partnership with software firm Tata Consultancy to facilitate the deployment of 4G networks across India at a time when rivals are focusing on rolling out 5G services. BSNL has struggled with limited infrastructure and competition from Reliance Industries’ Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, who have all offered cut-price 4G services. Shares in state-owned Mahanagar Telephone Nigam rose nearly 12% after news of the package emerged.
