ASEAN Countries Join Forces to Combat Transnational Crime

In a significant move to enhance regional security and cooperation, Indonesia and six other member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to combat transnational crime. The MoU was signed during the 17th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC) held in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara.

The MoU signifies a commitment to preventing and enforcing laws against transnational crime while also focusing on capacity building between nations. The member countries that signed the MoU, including Laos, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Malaysia, recognize the shared challenges they face in combating crimes that transcend national borders.

During the AMMTC session, Indonesian National Police Chief Police General Listyo Sigit emphasized the importance of prioritizing regional security and stability to achieve prosperity within ASEAN. He highlighted the fact that transnational criminals operate without regard for borders, sovereignty, or law, making it imperative for ASEAN countries to unite against this common enemy.

Sigit also alerted participants to the changing modus operandi of cross-border crimes, as criminals exploit existing loopholes and advancements in technology. To strengthen the commitment to combat transnational crimes, he underlined the need for cooperation and collaboration, urging all nations to think and act as a community while respecting the laws and regulations of each country.

Let me reiterate the importance of communication and cooperation in maintaining stability, security, and peace in the region, Sigit concluded during the AMMTC session.

The MoU signed by the ASEAN countries marks a significant step toward combating transnational crime collectively. By working together, these nations aim to protect their citizens and ensure the stability and security of the region as a whole. This united effort will not only help prevent transnational crimes but also promote stronger collaboration and the exchange of knowledge and expertise in the field of law enforcement.

The ASEAN member countries have recognized the importance of countering criminals who pose a threat to regional peace and prosperity. By signing this MoU, they have taken a crucial step towards strengthening their collective ability to combat transnational crime effectively. The shared commitment and increased cooperation will pave the way for a safer and more secure future for ASEAN.
