Sergeant Fatally Shot while Responding to Business Burglary
A tragic incident unfolded in Mpumalanga, South Africa, as Sergeant Vusi Elvis Siwela (38) was fatally shot while responding to a business burglary. The officer, along with his colleague who is also a Sergeant, was attending to a complaint about a burglary in progress at a supermarket in Masoyi, outside White River. In the early hours of Monday, August 21, 2023, around 12:30 a.m., they were attacked by armed suspects.
According to the police report, the Masoyi SAPS received a call about the break-in at the Chochocho Supermarket, where armed suspects had gained entry by detonating explosives on the doors. Upon receiving this information, the two officers rushed to the scene. However, as they approached, they were met with a barrage of bullets from the armed suspects. Tragically, Sergeant Siwela succumbed to his gunshot wounds, while the other Sergeant sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital.
The suspects managed to steal an undisclosed amount of cash as well as cigarettes from the supermarket before fleeing the scene. This heinous crime has prompted a strong condemnation from Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, the Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga.
Expressing her condolences to Sergeant Siwela’s family, Lieutenant General Manamela also wished a speedy recovery to the injured officer. She assured the public that every effort would be made to bring the perpetrators to justice. Lieutenant General Manamela emphasized the importance of protecting police officials, as their presence is vital in preventing and investigating crimes. She urged the public to assist the police by providing any information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects.
