Bangladesh Police Arrest 5 Doctors for Leaking Medical Admission Test Questions
In a significant development, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Bangladesh Police has apprehended five doctors for their involvement in leaking medical college admission test questions and accumulating money. The arrests took place in Khulna on Monday, and the individuals in custody have been identified as Dr. Md Yunus Uzzaman Khan Tarim, Luis Saurav Sarkar, Sharmistha Mondal, Mustahin Hasan Lamia, and Nazia Mehjabin Tisha.
CID Additional Police Superintendent (Media) Azad Rahman stated that those captured in Khulna were implicated in the leakage of medical admission question papers. The mastermind behind the operation, Jasim, was apprehended on August 13, and a diary containing names of individuals involved in the nationwide question paper leakage was seized from him. Acting on this information, the five doctors were subsequently arrested.
According to CID sources, Dr. Yunus Uzzaman, who serves as a doctor at Khulna Medical College Hospital, owns a coaching center called Three Doctors in Khulna. He has been consistently leaking medical question papers, with Luis Saurav, an alumnus of Khulna Medical College, teaching at the center while also working as a medical officer in a private company. Mustahin Hasan, Sharmistha Mondal, and Nazia Mehjabin were students at Khulna Medical College during the 2015-16 academic year.
Among the arrested doctors, Mustahin secured the 11th position nationwide in the medical admission test and was a student at the Three Doctors Coaching Centre. Sharmistha and Nazia gained admission into Khulna Medical College by utilizing leaked question papers from Three Doctors in exchange for money.
Dr. Sharmistha Mondal currently holds the position of an intern doctor at Khulna Medical College Hospital. On the other hand, Dr. Md Yunus Uzzaman Khan Tarim, an advisor at Three Doctors medical admission coaching in Khulna, is associated with Swadhinata Chikitchik Parishad and previously led Khulna Medical College Chhatra League. He currently works as an assistant registrar in the orthopedic department of the same hospital and has been involved in medical admission coaching for around 15 years. The other arrested doctors are employed by private hospitals.
This incident has raised concerns over the integrity of the medical admission process in Bangladesh. It is crucial for the authorities to take swift action to restore confidence among students and ensure a fair and transparent system in place. The accused doctors must face the full extent of the law for their illicit activities and bring an end to such fraudulent practices that undermine the credibility of the medical education system.
While the arrests are a step towards combating this issue, it is imperative to conduct a thorough investigation to identify others involved in leaking the medical admission question papers across the country. Additionally, measures must be implemented to strengthen the security and integrity of the examination system, preventing any further breaches and promoting a level playing field for all aspiring medical students.
The medical profession holds significant responsibility, and it is essential that the selection process for medical universities is unbiased, ensuring that only the most deserving candidates are granted admission. The authorities must work diligently to rectify this situation and uphold the sanctity of medical education in Bangladesh.
