In describing the excruciating pain, Durst said it was beyond anything he had ever experienced before, surpassing broken bones and head stitches. He desperately tried to flush his eyes with water, even resorting to squeezing lemons into his eyes to neutralize the chemicals.
At first, it seemed that Durst’s sight would be permanently lost due to the damage caused to his corneas. The chemicals had clouded over his corneas and prevented healthy tissue regeneration. However, in an experimental procedure outlined in the journal Science Advances, researchers successfully utilized stem cells from Durst’s healthier eye to culture new tissue for implantation into his damaged eye.
Lead researcher Dr. Ula Jurkunas, from the Cornea Service at Mass Eye and Ear in Boston, explained that corneas normally have transparent structures and contain stem cells. However, in cases of chemical injury, these stem cells can become depleted or destroyed, inhibiting the cornea’s ability to remain clear. Traditional corneal transplant techniques do not effectively address this specific type of eye injury.
Durst’s surgery took place in April 2018, almost one year after the accident. Surgeons biopsied tissue from his damaged, but still partially recoverable, right eye and sent it to a stem cell laboratory at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. After being cultured for two to three weeks, the lab-grown transplant was implanted into his left eye, replacing the damaged tissue.
Currently, Durst’s left eye remains cloudy, but he can perceive light and distinguish certain shapes and objects. The progress he has made so far is both remarkable and encouraging. Durst compares his vision to swimming in the bay, but he is grateful for any improvement.
This breakthrough offers hope to other workers who have suffered eye injuries and faced the prospect of permanent blindness. The ability to harness stem cells and cultivate new tissue for transplantation brings a new ray of hope to a previously challenging issue in ophthalmology. While further research and development are needed, this procedure could transform the lives of many individuals by partially restoring their vision.
