Australia Enhances Military Capabilities with Technologically Advanced Tomahawk Missiles

Australia is bolstering its arsenal with a cache of more than 200 advanced Tomahawk cruise missiles, demonstrating its commitment to strengthening its defense capabilities. Valued at $830 million, these missiles are considered to be some of the most powerful and technologically advanced weapons in Australia’s defense department inventory.

This move is part of Australia’s comprehensive military overhaul, which focuses on enhancing its long-range strike capabilities. The aim is to ensure the country can effectively deter potential adversaries like China and maintain the safety of its citizens in the complex and unpredictable global landscape.

By equipping the Australian navy’s Hobart Class destroyers with Tomahawk cruise missiles, the country strengthens its strike range capabilities to more than 1,000 kilometers (620 miles). Additionally, these Tomahawk missiles will be crucial assets for the roving nuclear-powered submarines Australia is acquiring under the landmark AUKUS pact.

Notably, the United Kingdom and the United States, Australia’s AUKUS allies, are the only other countries with significant stockpiles of Tomahawk missiles. This acquisition is therefore a major step in keeping Australia aligned with its partners in terms of military capabilities.

Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy emphasized the importance of these weapons, stating, As we enter what many are calling the missile age, these will be vital tools for the Australian Defence Force to do its job of defending Australians.

To further bolster its defense capabilities, Australia has also embraced a US offer to acquire HIMARS rockets. This mobile artillery system, known for its devastating effectiveness in the Ukrainian army, will provide Australia with additional strategic options.

Recognizing the significance of manufacturing capabilities, Australia is considering the establishment of its domestic missile manufacturing industry. This step aims to develop sovereign Australian defense manufacturing capabilities while ensuring a consistent supply of weapons amidst disruptions caused by conflicts like the war in Ukraine.

Given the ongoing global developments in missile technology, the US Army has conducted tests for prototype hypersonic cruise missiles at the Australian Defence Force weapons range in remote South Australia. Australia’s willingness to assist in such tests highlights its commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements and maintaining the necessary defense capabilities.

In conclusion, Australia’s decision to invest in advanced Tomahawk missiles and explore missile manufacturing capabilities reflects its determination to adapt to the evolving security landscape. By fortifying its military capabilities, Australia aims to deter potential threats and secure the safety of its people effectively.
