Dolphins QB Mike White Placed in NFL Concussion Protocol, James Blackman Re-signed

Miami Dolphins backup quarterback Mike White has entered the NFL’s concussion protocol after team staff observed irregularities during last Saturday’s preseason game against the Houston Texans, according to coach Mike McDaniel. White took the field in the third quarter when Skylar Thompson went to the sideline for evaluation on a potential injury.

Although no timeline has been provided for White’s return, the Dolphins have decided to re-sign quarterback James Blackman. Blackman was initially with the team during training camp but was recently released. He will be available for the Dolphins’ preseason finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars, alongside Thompson and Tua Tagovailoa.

During the game against the Texans, White faced pressure on second down at the Miami 41 and was sacked by Houston defensive end Adedayo Odeleye. He did not return to the field after being tackled to the ground, as Thompson finished the game in his place.

Head coach Mike McDaniel commented on the situation, stating that the team had planned to give White significant playing time in the game. However, plans quickly changed due to the unforeseen circumstances. McDaniel also mentioned that both White and Thompson were competing for the backup quarterback role behind Tagovailoa.

Injuries have become a concern for the Dolphins as the regular-season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers approaches on September 10. Rookie running back De’Von Achane suffered a shoulder injury during the game against the Texans but is expected to be week-to-week, avoiding any serious damage. Cornerback Cam Smith, a second-round pick in the 2023 draft, is currently out with a shoulder injury sustained in the game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Additionally, veteran left tackle Terron Armstead, who dealt with various injuries in 2022, appeared to sustain a lower-body injury during a joint practice with the Texans. While he was seen wearing a walking boot on his right foot, coach McDaniel remains optimistic about Armstead’s return and believes it is not a significant concern.

Robert Jones, who was competing for the starting left guard position, suffered a lower extremity injury that will keep him out of play for at least a week, according to McDaniel.

Despite the injuries, McDaniel stated that the team’s depth has allowed other players to showcase their skills in the absence of injured starters.

Regarding defensive lineman Christian Wilkins, who has not participated in team drills due to contract negotiations, coach McDaniel expressed that he hasn’t concerned himself with the situation. McDaniel has been in consistent contact with Wilkins and emphasized that once he is ready to return, he will let the coach know.

As the Dolphins prepare for the regular season, the focus now shifts to the recovery of the injured players and the ongoing competition for key positions on the team. The preseason finale against the Jaguars will provide an opportunity for the Dolphins to evaluate their roster and make final decisions before the start of the regular season.

In conclusion, the Dolphins have placed backup quarterback Mike White in the NFL’s concussion protocol, leading them to re-sign James Blackman. Injuries have also affected other players on the team, but the coaching staff remains optimistic about their recoveries and the team’s depth in dealing with these setbacks. The preseason finale will play a crucial role in determining the final roster for the Dolphins as they prepare for the upcoming regular season.
