Sikkim’s chief minister, Prem Singh Tamang, has urged the Indian Government to build an international business corridor in West Sikkim to improve connectivity with Nepal. Tamang stated that, if built, the corridor will speed up development in the state and create local employment opportunities in various sectors such as economic, social, cultural, tourism, and education. The Sikkim chief minister also said the central government appeared to be keen to consider the project, keeping in view its benefits to the people of Sikkim, adding that a decision would be taken in due course. Furthermore, he mentioned that the proposed business corridor is bound to have a positive impact on the economic growth of both India and Nepal as both countries have friendly relations. Once operational, the corridor would witness business activities like in Nathula, boosting trade and tourism and opening up economic opportunities for the people residing on either side of the international border. Tamang also inaugurated a forest house at Chewabhanjyang, which he said would lay down a roadmap for the development of the region. He wrapped up his visit by interacting with security personnel at the location and assuring them of all possible support.
