Recognizing the severity of the offense, the police launched an intensive investigation to bring the perpetrator to justice. Their efforts were not in vain as a member of the public provided a crucial tip about spotting a man that matched the suspect’s description on the same bridge.
Acting swiftly, officers apprehended Mawson with the assistance of an off-duty police officer. Despite initially denying the offense, DNA evidence collected from the victim’s skirt eventually led to Mawson being charged with sexual assault.
On August 11, Mawson appeared before Peterlee Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty and was remanded into custody.
