Title: High Risk Offender Sentenced for ‘Despicable’ Crime of Ejaculating on Tourist in Durham City

Durham City witnessed a distressing incident unfold on June 28 this year, as a high-risk sex offender committed a truly despicable act of indecency. Kurtis Russell Mawson, a 21-year-old resident of High Street, Willington, stood behind a tourist on Prebends Bridge and, without any warning, ejaculated on her.

The unsuspecting victim had been engrossed in capturing the beauty of the city when she felt something warm on her leg. Immediately sensing something was amiss, she reached out for help from nearby individuals, who confirmed they had witnessed a man in a brown hoodie hastily fleeing the scene.

Alarmed and disgusted, the woman sought refuge in a nearby shop, where the authorities were promptly notified. Recognizing the severity of the offense, the police launched an intensive investigation to bring the perpetrator to justice. Their efforts were not in vain as a member of the public provided a crucial tip about spotting a man that matched the suspect’s description on the same bridge.

Acting swiftly, officers apprehended Mawson with the assistance of an off-duty police officer. Despite initially denying the offense, DNA evidence collected from the victim’s skirt eventually led to Mawson being charged with sexual assault.

On August 11, Mawson appeared before Peterlee Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty and was remanded into custody. Recognition for the diligent work done by the officers involved in the case was expressed by PC Katie Warren, a member of Durham CID. She explained, This was a traumatic incident for the victim whose visit to our city was understandably marred by Mawson’s despicable actions. Our officers worked tirelessly to apprehend Mawson and want to thank all those that gave us information from our appeal to help take such a dangerous offender off the streets.

The people of Durham City can find some solace in knowing that justice will soon be served. Mawson is set to face sentencing on September 8 at Durham Crown Court. It is anticipated that the court will take into account the gravity of the offense and impose a suitable sentence to reflect the disturbing nature of the crime.

This incident serves as a reminder that even in otherwise peaceful settings, individuals must remain vigilant. The authorities encourage everyone to promptly report any suspicious or criminal behavior to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and tourists alike.

Durham City’s reputation as a welcoming and picturesque destination should not be overshadowed by the actions of one individual. By working together and taking swift action, the community can continue to uphold the values of safety, respect, and dignity for all.
