Lawmaker Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo Resigns from National Assembly to Become Minister

Lawmaker Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has made the decision to resign from his position in the 10th National Assembly in order to serve as a minister. Tunji-Ojo, who represents the Akoko Northeast and Northwest federal constituency of Ondo, tendered his resignation just hours before his scheduled swearing-in ceremony for ministers-designate. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated and appointed Tunji-Ojo as a minister.

In his resignation letter, addressed to the speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, Tunji-Ojo explained that his new ministerial appointment necessitated his departure from his current role. He expressed his commitment to contributing to the advancement of Nigeria as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, acknowledging the need for collaborative efforts to achieve great heights.

Tunji-Ojo was initially elected as a member of the House of Representatives in 2019 and served as the chair of the Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in the Ninth National Assembly. He was reelected in 2023 but has now decided to step down to take on his new role as a minister.

The former lawmaker has been assigned the portfolio of the newly created Marine and Blue Economy. However, in a recent cabinet reshuffle by President Bola Tinubu, Tunji-Ojo was redeployed as the interior minister. He has been replaced by former Osun State Governor, Gboyega Oyetola.

This development marks an important moment in Tunji-Ojo’s political career as he shifts from being a member of the National Assembly to a minister. The decision not only reflects his personal ambition but also highlights the urgent need for collaboration to advance Nigeria’s progress. As Tunji-Ojo takes on his new responsibilities, it remains to be seen how he will contribute to the country’s development in his role as the interior minister.

The transition from the National Assembly to a ministerial position is a significant move that could have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s governance and the pursuit of its national objectives.
