The AIIMS-Bhubaneswar has started collecting DNA samples for over 100 unidentified bodies brought from the train accident site in Bahanaga, Balasore. While 177 of the 278 dead persons have been identified, the remaining 101 bodies need to be identified and handed over to their families. AIIMS has received 123 bodies, with around 64 identified, and has requisitioned five freezers from Paradip Port to preserve the bodies. Although the tragedy had mutilated some of the victims’ faces, many people are able to recognise their loved ones but can’t claim the bodies due to more than one family claiming a single body. It may take at least seven to ten days to get a DNA sampling report. The dead and mangled bodies are being preserved to give the kin of victims more time to identify bodies.
