Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College in Indore is teaming up with the Sankalp India Foundation (SIF) to launch a screening program aimed at preventing the birth of children with severe haemoglobin disorders. The project will involve testing all expectant mothers, and the fathers of their children, if the mother is found to have thalassaemia or sickle cell anaemia. The screening will take place in the first trimester of pregnancy. SIF will provide the technology platform, including an online application called ‘Stopthal’, which allows them to monitor and track the progress of the screening. SIF will also bear the cost of HPLC tests and antenatal and screening tests, and will train the staff and provide support in screening. Dr Sanjay Dixit of MGM Medical College has described the program as a significant step in preventing and managing the disease.
