From June 11, women in the Indian state of Karnataka will be able to travel for free on government buses under the scheme Shakti Yojana. To benefit, women will need to obtain a smart card, available following application. While the smart card application process will be open for three months, in the meantime, women can present ID cards issued by state or central government. Transgender travellers are also eligible. However, only Sarige bus services are covered, not high-end buses such as Rajahamsa, non-AC Sleeper or Airavat buses. The scheme is also only available to native residents of Karnataka.
