According to Kashmir valley farmers, the recent weather vagaries have resulted in a 55% loss of the famous cherry fruit this year. Rain and hailstorm have significantly impacted the crop’s growth, with the cherry season lasting from mid-May until mid-July. Due to the intermittent rains, below-normal temperatures, and hailstorm, the cherry crop has suffered tremendously this year. Farmers in the Ganderbal district, where half the total population is dependent on the outcome of the fruit, have suffered severe losses with cherry fruit lying in orchards, unsold and unwanted. Despite the health benefits of cherries, such as protecting one from various infections and maintaining blood pressure, no official team has come to assess the damage that occurred due to the unpleasant weather and hailstorm. The farmers hope to appeal to pilgrims during the forthcoming Amarnath Yatra tour, as they offer their cherry stalls and hope to sell their stock.
