India has announced the extension of Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card eligibility criteria, from the fourth to the sixth generation of original Indian immigrants in Suriname. President Droupadi Murmu made this announcement during a cultural festival in Paramaribo, marking 150 years of Indian arrival in Suriname. She highlighted OCI cards as an essential link in the longstanding relationship between India and Suriname, and encouraged Indian diaspora members to continue strengthening their connections with India. Murmu also expressed solidarity with Suriname, recognising the shared experience of rebuilding economies and social systems after periods of colonial rule. The first ship carrying 452 Indian labourers, most of whom hailed from eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, arrived in Suriname’s capital on June 5, 1873.
