Rapid Rise of Covid Variants Sparks Concern in UK and Beyond

New cases of Covid-19 are on the rise once again, with three concerning variants currently active in the UK, causing apprehension among health officials and the public. According to recent data released by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), there were 10.8 cases per 100,000 people in the week leading up to August 14, up from 9.3 cases per 100,000 at the end of July.

Among the variants causing alarm is the Eris mutation, which accounts for one in seven cases across the country. Another variant of concern is the BA.2.86 mutation, also known as ‘Pirola’, which has also been detected and closely monitored. Additionally, a new subvariant of Omicron, referred to as ‘BA.6’ or ‘Pi’, has been identified and is being described by scientists as ‘the real deal’.

The symptoms of the Eris mutation closely resemble those of the heavily publicized Omicron variant, including a sore throat, runny nose, blocked nose, sneezing, cough without phlegm, headache, cough with phlegm, hoarse voice, muscle aches and pains, and an altered sense of smell. However, shortness of breath, loss of smell, and fever are no longer considered the main symptoms. Instead, three other symptoms to be aware of are diarrhea, rashes, and eye irritation.

The BA.2.86 (‘Pirola’) mutation is said to potentially evade the immunity gained through prior infections or vaccination. Its symptoms include a high fever, cough, cold, and loss of the sense of taste or smell. This variant was first detected in Denmark in July and subsequently found in Israel and the US.

The new subvariant, BA.6 (‘Pi’), of the Omicron variant has been detected in Israel and Denmark. The scientific community has referred to it as ‘BA.6’. It is considered noteworthy due to its numerous mutations and its potential ability to spread more efficiently.

While scientists are closely monitoring these variants, the UKHSA has stated that there is currently insufficient data to determine the severity of the new strains or their potential to evade vaccine protection.

Health experts urge the public to remain vigilant and follow recommended guidelines to help mitigate the spread of these variants. Regular hand hygiene, wearing masks in crowded indoor settings, maintaining social distance, and getting vaccinated are crucial steps in protecting oneself and others.

The rise of these variants serves as a reminder of the ever-evolving nature of the Covid-19 pandemic. Continuous monitoring and adaptation of strategies are vital in combating the virus effectively.
