June 6 marked the 39th anniversary of ‘Operation Bluestar’, a military operation ordered by former Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, to eliminate militants led by Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale from the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar. In a message delivered to commemorate the occasion, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh described the scars of the 1984 attack as making Sikhs ‘mazboot’ (meaning, strong in Hindi). Singh called upon all Sikh sects to come together to strengthen ‘Sikh shakti’ in rural areas, indicating concern over the rise of Christianity in villages bordering Pakistan. Singh also appealed to Sikh missionaries to preach Sikhism jointly, particularly to those in remote rural areas who may feel dejected. The Jathedar asked for action to bring back ‘patits’ (Sikhs with shorn or cut hair) back to the Sikh fold, hinting at the SGPC to inculcate Sikh values among youngsters so that they stop cutting their hair short. Today, Sikh radical group Dal Khalsa organized a rally in support of Khalistan, prompting tight security in the city.
