The Los Angeles Dodgers have called up pitching prospect Ryan Pepiot from Triple-A Oklahoma City to replace the injured Tony Gonsolin in their rotation. Pepiot made his debut in the team’s split doubleheader against the Miami Marlins on Saturday, entering the game in the second inning after opener Caleb Ferguson.
Pepiot’s call-up could potentially result in an extended stint in the rotation as Gonsolin deals with a right elbow/forearm injury that may sideline him for the remainder of the season. The Dodgers utilized Pepiot as their 27th player for the doubleheader, allowing them to send him back to the minors without undergoing the usual re-option process.
Manager Dave Roberts mentioned a few other potential candidates to fill in for Gonsolin, including Gavin Stone and Ryan Yarbrough. However, Yarbrough’s ability to provide bulk relief makes him an asset in other roles as well.
The Dodgers currently see Pepiot’s role as a short-term solution for the doubleheader. Pepiot expressed his willingness to contribute in any way he can and help the team by picking up innings.
Prior to his call-up, Pepiot had an impressive outing for Oklahoma City, taking a perfect game into the seventh inning and tallying 11 strikeouts in 6â…” innings. The right-hander had won the fifth starter spot during spring training but landed on the injured list on opening day due to a strained left oblique. After rehabbing and making several starts, Pepiot was activated and optioned to Triple-A.
Pepiot acknowledged the challenges of his extended time off, attributing the delay to the oblique injury spreading to his intercostal muscle. Despite the setback, he remained focused and worked to strike a balance between rest and maintaining his throwing routine.
With his call-up, Pepiot becomes the 38th pitcher used by the Dodgers this season, just one shy of the club record set in 2021. The Dodgers and the Tampa Bay Rays currently share the lead for most pitchers used in the majors this year.
As the Dodgers deal with Gonsolin’s injury and aim to solidify their rotation, Pepiot’s performance will be closely watched. His presence provides an opportunity for the team to evaluate his potential and further strengthen their pitching depth for the remainder of the season.
