The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde, has launched a cluster redevelopment program in Thane aimed at rebuilding several buildings in a single area, creating economies of scale and space. Shinde stated that this program will be extended to the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The new program is a historic move by the state government after amending rules and regulations for the relief of people living in tenements that have been declared dangerous. The cluster redevelopment program was launched in Thane, where the first phase will see 10,000 tenements rebuilt on a cumulative area of 1,500 hectares, touted as the largest in Asia. Shinde’s ambition is to create planned cities comprising cluster redevelopment projects. Various agencies such as MHADA, CIDCO, and BMC will take over incomplete and delayed redevelopment projects in Mumbai. In the first phase, CIDCO MD Sanjay Mukherjee said the planning authority will execute the project using pre-fab construction technology, and soil testing and levelling work has already begun. MLA Sanjay Kelkar hailed Shinde for his role in getting this program off the ground and urged him to remove SRA schemes from the cluster redevelopment program.
