NSCN(IM) Denies Allegations of Supplying Weapons and Fighters to Manipur Amid Ethnic Violence

The NSCN(IM), the largest armed group of the Nagas, has strongly refuted claims of supplying weapons and sending fighters to Manipur during the ongoing ethnic violence between the Kukis and the Meiteis. A video circulated on social media alleged that the NSCN(IM) had dispatched 15 trained fighters to support the Meiteis in their conflict against the Kukis. However, the NSCN(IM) dismissed the video as a scripted production by some mischievous agency.

The man featured in the video was identified as H Khosiivei Lovingson Roah, a private in the Naga army who joined national service in October last year. According to the NSCN(IM), Roah went missing after being granted medical leave for an ear infection and was not involved in any mission related to Manipur.

The ethnic violence between the Kukis and Meiteis erupted on May 3, triggered by the Kuki-Zo-Chin tribes’ demand for a separate administration in response to the Meiteis’ push for Scheduled Tribes (ST) status. Amidst the tension, the NSCN(IM) emphasizes that it remains focused on resolving the conflict peacefully.

In July this year, six individuals, including an inspector of the Nagaland Police and a leader of an armed group, were apprehended for stealing ammunition from the state police armoury. The ammunition was allegedly intended for transmission to Manipur, and one of the arrestees was affiliated with the NSCN(IM). It is crucial to note that the NSCN(IM) has been engaged in a truce with the central government since 1997 and has been pursuing dialogue to promote peace in the region.

The NSCN(IM), led by 85-year-old Thuingaleng Muivah, signed a historic framework agreement with the government in August 2015, with the aim of fostering peace in the state. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the agreement as a significant step towards achieving lasting stability.

While conflicting narratives continue to emerge regarding the involvement of the NSCN(IM) in Manipur’s ethnic violence, it is essential to approach the situation without jumping to conclusions. The video circulated on social media has been labeled as a scripted production, and the NSCN(IM) highlights the need for a balanced view to prevent further chaos and ensure an unbiased understanding of the situation. The dialogue between the NSCN(IM) and the central government remains ongoing, and both parties are committed to finding a peaceful resolution to existing conflicts.

In the midst of these developments, it is crucial to prioritize communication, understanding, and the pursuit of a harmonious coexistence among the various ethnic groups in Manipur. The allegations against the NSCN(IM) demand careful scrutiny and a comprehensive assessment of the facts before forming definitive conclusions.
