Revolutionary AI Technology Uses Chest X-Rays for Accurate Age Estimation and Chronic Disease Prediction

Cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) technology has made a breakthrough in the field of medical imaging. According to a recent study, researchers have successfully developed an AI model that utilizes chest X-rays to accurately estimate a person’s age and predict the likelihood of chronic diseases. To achieve accurate age estimation, the AI model was trained using a vast dataset of approximately 67,100 chest radiographs from 36,051 healthy individuals who had undergone health check-ups between 2008 and 2021. The researchers discovered a strong correlation between the age estimated by the AI model and the individuals’ chronological age.

The model was further trained to analyze the relationship between the AI-estimated age and different diseases using an additional dataset of 34,197 chest radiographs from patients with known diseases. Altogether, the model was trained on a comprehensive collection of around 101,300 chest X-rays obtained from 70,248 participants across five esteemed institutions in Japan.

The findings revealed a significant association between the difference in AI-estimated age and the presence of chronic diseases, including hypertension, hyperuricemia (high levels of uric acid in the blood), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In other words, the higher the age estimated by the AI model, the higher the likelihood of individuals having these particular diseases.

One of the advantages of using chest X-rays as a biomarker for aging and longevity is their ability to provide valuable insights beyond just the shape of internal features. They also offer detailed information about organs and bones, contributing to a more comprehensive assessment of an individual’s health.
