Nigerian Navy Takes Action in Crackdown on Crude Oil Thieves in Niger Delta
The Nigerian Navy is intensifying its efforts to combat crude oil theft in the Niger Delta region. Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, the Chief of Naval Staff, expressed the navy’s commitment to eradicating the activities of oil thieves during a visit to navy units in Lagos.
Crude oil theft has been a persistent problem in the Niger Delta, with criminal syndicates siphoning off large quantities of oil from the country’s facilities. The Nigerian Navy considers it a crucial responsibility to prevent and thwart these illegal activities.
Admiral Ogalla emphasized that the navy will enhance its capacity and capability in tackling oil theft. It is determined to ensure that oil thieves no longer thrive in the Niger Delta area. By assessing the situation on the ground and developing effective strategies, the navy aims to significantly improve its operations and eradicate this menace.
One of the key measures being undertaken is the establishment of a naval base in Epe, Lagos. This move is intended to provide adequate protection for the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ) and promote enhanced security for businesses operating in Lagos, which plays a strategic role in the country’s economy.
The Chief of Naval Staff highlighted the significance of seaports in driving economic growth and outlined his policy direction to establish new bases and deploy resources strategically. He also expressed confidence in the navy’s capabilities, citing the presence of strategic bases like NNS BEECROFT in Lagos.
