India is planning to challenge the European Union (EU) over its proposal to impose tariffs on high-carbon imports, including steel, cement, and iron ore. The tariffs are part of the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) which aims to encourage local industries to develop technologies that reduce carbon emissions. The South Asian nation has pledged to combat CBAM by raising the issue in bilateral talks and filing a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO). India is alleging that the CBAM is a discriminatory and illegal trade barrier affecting the exports of numerous developing countries, including India. The tariffs could make India’s free trade agreements with other countries redundant, warns the Exporters’ Body.
