The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has given instructions to insurance companies to quickly settle claims of the recent train accident in the Odisha state. The accident left 275 dead and over 1,000 injured. The IRDAI has asked life and general insurers to reduce some of the requirements or rely on alternate documents to speed up claim settlements. Two non-life insurers, SBI General Insurance and Liberty General Insurance, are providing death/permanent total disability insurance cover of INR10 lakh ($13,240) for passengers with confirmed tickets and who chose travel accident insurance while booking their tickets on the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation’s online portal by paying INR0.35. In case of partial disability, the cover is INR7.5 lakh and medical expenses up to INR200,000 are claimable.
