ISIL Claims Responsibility for Deadly Attack at Iranian Shrine
In a tragic incident at the Shah Cheragh holy shrine in Shiraz, Iran, a deadly attack claimed the lives of two Iranians and left eight innocent people injured. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has taken responsibility for this act of terror. The United Nations Security Council released a statement expressing their deepest sympathy and condolences to the victims’ families and the government of Iran. They also wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
The Security Council members strongly condemned terrorism in all its forms, highlighting its grave threat to international peace and security. They emphasized the importance of holding accountable the individuals and groups responsible for organizing, financing, and supporting these reprehensible acts of terrorism. All member states were urged to actively cooperate with the Iranian government and other relevant authorities to combat terrorism, in accordance with international law and relevant Security Council resolutions.
It is essential to remember that terrorism, regardless of its motivation or perpetrators, is criminal and unjustifiable. The Security Council members reiterated the need for all countries to use all means at their disposal to address the threats posed by terrorist acts, in accordance with the United Nations Charter and other international obligations, including human rights, refugee, and humanitarian law.
This is not the first time the Shah Cheragh shrine has been targeted by armed terrorists. Last year, a similar attack occurred on October 26, resulting in the tragic loss of 15 pilgrims, including women and children, and injuring many others. The armed terrorist responsible was eventually shot and injured by security forces and later passed away in the hospital.
These senseless acts of violence underscore the ongoing battle against terrorism and the paramount importance of international cooperation to ensure peace and security. The global community must stand united against terrorism in all its forms, working together to bring justice to the victims and prevent future atrocities.
As investigations into this latest attack at the Iranian shrine continue, it is crucial that all nations support efforts to combat terrorism actively. Only through collective action and shared commitment can we hope to overcome the scourge of terrorism and create a safer, more peaceful world for all.
