New Poll Shows Majority of Republicans Express Reluctance Towards Trump’s Potential 2024 Run

A recent poll conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Centre for Public Affairs Research reveals that a significant portion of Republicans do not want former President Donald Trump to run for office again in 2024. The survey indicates that approximately 63% of Republicans express their opposition to Trump’s potential candidacy, marking an increase from the 55% who held this stance in April when Trump began facing legal challenges.

While Trump has consistently touted his support among Republicans, these poll results suggest that the road to a successful campaign in the general elections might be particularly challenging for him. It appears that a considerable number of Americans stand firmly against his bid for re-election.

Although 74% of Americans, primarily Republicans, claim they would support Trump if he were to run in November 2024, the poll exposes a contrasting sentiment. Among this group, 53% assert that they would definitely not support him if he secures the nomination. An additional 11% indicate that they would likely abstain from supporting him in the November 2024 elections. Ultimately, these figures reveal that a staggering 64% of Americans would not vote for Trump if he were to enter the race in 2024.

These findings align with the arguments put forth by Trump’s rivals who praise his tenure as president and view his popularity within the Republican Party as an advantage during the nomination process. However, they caution that Trump may struggle to acquire the necessary votes outside of his loyal Republican base in a general election.

Trump’s past electoral experiences underscore this sentiment. In the 2016 campaign, he lost the popular vote but secured the presidency by winning a majority in the Electoral College. However, his defeat in the 2020 election was even more pronounced, with Democrat Joe Biden emerging victoriously by a margin of 7 million votes. Trump has falsely attributed his loss to widespread voter fraud, a claim that has been debunked.

In light of these poll results, it becomes apparent that Trump’s potential bid for the presidency faces resistance among Republicans and a significant portion of the American electorate. While his standing within the Republican Party remains strong, these numbers highlight the challenges he may encounter in appealing to a broader range of voters during a general election.
