Tampa Bay Rays All-Star Wander Franco is under investigation by the Dominican Republic’s Division for Minors and Gender Violence on allegations of having a relationship with a minor. The investigation is being led by the National Agency for Boys, Girls, Adolescents, and Family and the Gender Violence Unit, located in the province of Peravia where Franco was born. Judge Olga Dina Llaverias, specializing in child abuse cases, will also handle the case.
Prosecutor Angel Dario Tejeda Fabal stated that the investigation is sensitive due to the involvement of a minor, and they are working in collaboration with Judge Llaverias. They are hopeful to provide some necessary information without jeopardizing the ongoing investigation.
MLB and United States authorities have not approached Fabal regarding the matter. However, the Rays have supported the league’s steps in understanding the situation, and Franco has temporarily been placed on the restricted list during the investigation.
The news of Franco’s alleged inappropriate relationship with a minor is not the first as a complaint from a 17-year-old girl was filed against him in July. MLB and the Rays have yet to comment on the second allegation.
On his Instagram Live, Franco denied the allegations, with teammate Jose Siri in the background claiming people were motivated by money.
Currently, Franco must sit out at least six games while on the restricted list. The Tampa Bay Rays signed him to an 11-year, $182 million deal, solidifying him as a cornerstone player for the franchise.
Franco has been performing well, earning a spot on this season’s All-Star team. He has a .281 batting average, .344 on-base percentage, .475 slugging percentage, 17 home runs, and 58 RBI over 112 games.
The investigation into Franco’s alleged relationship with a minor highlights a serious issue that must be thoroughly addressed. As the case progresses, more information will likely come to light, shedding further clarity on the situation.
