The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has established a committee to confirm the qualifications of teachers who are being employed by the schools it governs. The committee will also conduct background checks. The decision was made following poor results from the BBMP schools in Karnataka state exams for the 2022-23 academic year. The BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath revealed that despite requests for qualified teachers to be appointed, nothing had been done. Teachers are required to hold basic qualifications, such as having passed pre-university college and taken the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). Nevertheless, subsequent background checks have shown that many do not have these necessary qualifications. The BBMP schools boast a historic pass percentage of less than 50% in board exams and the schools continue to experience a lack of qualified teachers. Chief Commissioner Girinath said, We have been calling for qualified teachers who are professional and can perform their duties efficiently. The hiring process will be finished by the end of June, with many teachers currently on short-term contracts that are due to expire.
