The El Paso Department of Public Health is hosting an Emergency Preparedness Carnival to celebrate National Preparedness Month. The aim of the event is to encourage residents of El Paso, Texas, to be prepared for various emergencies and to ensure the safety of themselves and their loved ones.

As part of the month-long celebration, the community is invited to attend the DPH Emergency Preparedness Carnival, which will feature proclamation and information booths, games, and prizes. The carnival is a collaboration with the City’s Sesquicentennial Celebration, adding an extra element of excitement and fun.

The event will take place at The Beast Urban Park, providing a central location for residents to gather and participate in various activities. Guests will have the opportunity to learn about what is needed to build an emergency kit, create a family emergency plan, and receive tips on how to stay safe during an emergency. Additionally, there will be games and prizes to be won in a carnival-themed celebration.

National Preparedness Month is observed nationwide in September to promote family and community disaster planning throughout the year. This year’s theme, Preparing for Older Adults, emphasizes the importance of preparing older adults for disasters, particularly those who live alone, have low income, disabilities, or reside in rural areas. The Department of Public Health strongly urges residents to include their elderly family members and neighbors in their emergency planning efforts, ensuring they have a comprehensive emergency kit and plan in place for their family and pets.

Ruth Castillo, the Public Health Emergency Preparedness Program Manager, emphasized the significance of National Preparedness Month, stating, It is important for us to know our local hazards and how to prepare for them, whether it is flooding, extreme weather, disease outbreaks, or man-made disasters. Every household must have a plan of action and practice it with all family members.
