Air Security and Logistics Workers in Nigeria Strike Over Poor Wages

In a bid to address their long-standing grievances regarding poor wages, workers in the air security and logistics sector in Nigeria have commenced an immediate strike. The National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) has issued a directive instructing Aviation Security (AVSEC) and logistics sub-sector employees to withdraw their services until their demands are met.

According to a circular obtained by New Telegraph and signed by Ocheme Aba, the General Secretary of NUATE, the strike was deemed necessary due to the unjust remuneration of AVSEC workers, who are predominantly university graduates. The circular revealed that these highly skilled individuals are currently earning a meager monthly income of just N30,000. The disparity between their qualifications and wages has become untenable, leading to this drastic action.

The striking workers have addressed their concerns to key stakeholders in the aviation industry, including the Director-General Civil Aviation (DGCA), Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Commissioner of Police at the Airports Command, Airport Commandant, and Director of the Department of State Security (DSS) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

The NUATE circular underlines the urgency of resolving this issue, emphasizing the significant role played by AVSEC and logistics workers in ensuring the safety and efficiency of air travel in Nigeria. It is crucial to ensure fair and competitive wages for these individuals who carry out essential tasks related to security and logistics within the aviation sector.

The strike action serves as a wake-up call for authorities to address the salary discrepancies and provide adequate remuneration for AVSEC and logistics workers. The protesters believe that a salary increase is not only necessary to enhance their livelihoods but also to improve the overall quality of the services they provide. The strike demonstrates the determination of these workers to secure a better future for themselves.

As the strike continues, travelers and stakeholders in the aviation industry may experience disruptions and delays. It is essential for all parties involved to engage in constructive dialogue to reach a resolution that balances the workers’ demands with the operational needs of the industry. Finding a mutually beneficial solution is paramount to ensuring the resumption of normal operations and maintaining the integrity of air security and logistics in Nigeria.

The issues at hand require attention from the government, airport authorities, and other relevant stakeholders. Addressing the wage disparity and providing fair compensation will not only motivate and retain skilled AVSEC and logistics professionals but also contribute to the overall growth and efficiency of the aviation sector. The wellbeing of air security and logistics workers must be prioritized to ensure a safe and prosperous future for Nigeria’s air travel industry.
