Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley have made a significant breakthrough in the field of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) with their development of a machine learning model that can decode brain activity to recreate music. Specifically, the team used this technology to recreate Pink Floyd’s iconic song Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1. Moreover, they note that their current research did not account for the participants’ familiarity with the song or music in general, which could impact outcomes across different individuals.

While some may express concerns regarding AI privacy, it is essential to understand that this encoding system is highly personalized to each participant and requires invasive electrodes and training to achieve even a rough approximation of the song they are listening to. Therefore, there is no need to fear machines listening to the music one is thinking about or reading their minds. Instead, this technology holds great promise for individuals with paralysis, neurological disorders, or speech impairments, as it could enable them to create and perceive music independently.

While companies like Neuralink and Synchron focus on creating BCIs for speech and interactions with computers and mobile devices, relatively little effort has been directed towards music.
