UNICEF partnered with the Chhattisgarh police and the Counsel to Secure Justice (CSJ) to launch a campaign against drug abuse and related crimes in the Bilaspur district. The joint effort, called ‘Nijaat’ or Riddance, aims to reach out to juveniles who have been involved in drug-related offenses and help them lead normal lives in society. Unicef and CSJ conducted interactive dialogue sessions with Bilaspur police officers to discuss legal and behavioral aspects of dealing with juvenile offenders and how to extend psychosocial support during criminal proceedings.

Nijaat has been recognized by the International Association of Chiefs of Police as a successful Leadership in Crime Prevention initiative in the institutional category. Under the guidance of the district police chief Santosh Kumar Singh, Bilaspur police launched a mobilization crusade against drug abuse and trafficking to enable teens to live healthy lives and make informed choices.

Unicef and CSJ will gather information about children who are involved in drug addictions and crimes from Bilaspur’s police station, records, and work with them to evolve a comprehensive plan towards engaging young adolescents in the prevention of crime besides the abuse of illicit drugs and narcotics. The mission aims to promote the well-being of the young, enlighten and empower them in different spheres of life through constructive planning and content.

Various non-government organisations, academicians, and civil society groups will be roped in to support the healthier future of children and adolescents. By launching this initiative, Unicef and CSJ aim to inspire youths to dream big and work towards a brighter future.
