Taguig Mayor Urges Makati City to Prioritize Learners in Boundary Dispute

Taguig City Mayor Maria Laarni Cayetano has called on the Makati City government to prioritize the welfare of learners in the ongoing boundary dispute between the two cities. The dispute, which centers around the ownership of several schools, has caused concern among residents and parents of students in the affected areas.

During the kick-off of the Brigada Eskwela at Makati Science High School, Mayor Cayetano expressed her concern for the children and urged Makati City not to sacrifice their welfare. She emphasized that the structures in question were built using taxpayers’ money and should not be closed down.

Mayor Cayetano also questioned Makati’s claim of ownership over the schools and criticized their plan to shut them down. She stressed that the schools belong to the people of Taguig, particularly the embo barangays.

To address the issue, Mayor Cayetano offered to absorb all the security and utility personnel of the 14 affected schools. She also reiterated her commitment to support the schools during the transition period and asked for understanding and patience from the General Parents Teachers Association officers and members.

Meanwhile, the Makati City government revealed that Taguig officials had rejected their offer to continue providing free uniforms, shoes, supplies, and other school needs to the affected students. Since the 1990s, Makati has been providing these services to all public school students.

Makati City Administrator Claro Certeza confirmed that Mayor Abby Binay proposed a status quo arrangement to ensure a smooth transition and avoid disruption in school operations. However, Taguig officials rejected the offer during a meeting held in July.

Despite the rejection, Makati’s offer still stands. Certeza appealed to prioritize the students’ welfare and urged both cities to work together for their benefit. He emphasized that the free school gear and supplies greatly alleviate the worries of parents and students in the affected barangays.

In response, Mayor Cayetano assured the teachers and students that she would closely work with officials from the Department of Education to address their concerns. She also mentioned that Taguig has prepared school kits, which will be distributed to the students soon.

The boundary dispute between Taguig and Makati has caused tension and uncertainty among the affected communities. Both cities must find a resolution that prioritizes the welfare of the learners and ensures a smooth transition for everyone involved.
