The Conservative Party’s opposition to London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s proposal for a daily charge on older vehicles played a significant role in their recent by-election victory. Stoke-on-Trent North MP Jonathan Gullis has launched a petition against the introduction of a ULEZ, although there are currently no plans for one. Taxi drivers and car retailers fear that such charges would harm their business and negatively impact motorists in the area.
Taxi driver Paul Wilkes highlights the potential financial burden on taxi drivers, stating that not all drivers can afford to upgrade their cars to meet the required emissions standards. He notes that increased costs, including insurance, fuel, and vehicle maintenance, make it difficult for drivers to absorb additional charges. Wilkes argues that the industry is already low-paid and faces numerous challenges, such as dealing with late-night passengers. Umesh Sumani, a used car retailer, echoes Wilkes’ concerns and emphasizes that many people in the area cannot afford to switch to electric vehicles. He also believes that introducing a ULEZ could further deter people from visiting the city center of Stoke-on-Trent, which is already experiencing declining footfall.
In 2022, the Conservative administration in Stoke-on-Trent proposed a Clean Air Zone for commercial vehicles only. While Mr. Gullis clarifies that this would not affect privately owned vehicles, he opposes the introduction of any policies that could harm motorists or businesses. Gullis asserts that alternative methods should be considered to reduce CO2 levels and highlights the city’s existing green policies. However, Jane Ashworth, the Labour leader of Stoke-on-Trent City Council, blames the government for pushing projects that negatively impact motorists. She cites the controversial bus gate plan at Basford Bank as an example and suggests that Gullis is hoping to divert attention from the government’s directives.
While there are no immediate plans to implement a ULEZ in Stoke-on-Trent, the concerns raised by taxi firms and car dealers highlight the potential impact such measures could have on local businesses and motorists.
