Municipality of Lakeshore Acquires Stoney Point Tavern Property for Community Park Expansion

The Municipality of Lakeshore has recently made an exciting acquisition that will contribute to the expansion of Stoney Point Community Park. The former Stoney Point Tavern property, located at 7340 Tecumseh Road, has been purchased by the municipality and will be demolished later this year. The land will then be incorporated into the community park, providing new opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy outdoor recreational activities.

Tracey Bailey, the Mayor of Lakeshore, expressed her enthusiasm for this development, stating, The purchase of this property is the next step for Stoney Point Community Park. As a Council, we know that the residents of Stoney Point/Point-aux-Roche have been eager to find out what the future holds. We appreciate everyone’s patience, and we are excited to finally be able to make this announcement. This acquisition reflects the municipality’s dedication to meeting the needs and desires of its community members.

The decision to acquire the former tavern property was driven by the feedback received during a two-part community visioning exercise that began in the spring of 2022. During this exercise, residents and users of the park were encouraged to share their ideas and suggestions for potential improvements to the park and its amenities. The need for a public access point off Tecumseh Road was a prominent request from the community, prompting the Council to explore solutions, including the purchase of adjacent properties.

Negotiations between Lakeshore and the property owner began in May 2023 and successfully concluded with the purchase in June. The acquisition cost the municipality $350,000, which will be funded through Lakeshore’s Parkland Dedication Reserve Fund. With the property now secured, the second round of community visioning will commence later this year. Community members will have the opportunity to review and provide feedback on two draft concept plans that have been developed based on the input received during the initial phase of the visioning process.

Looking ahead, the former tavern land is expected to serve as a public access point from Tecumseh Road and potentially accommodate additional parking spaces, pending further planning and budget approvals. The visioning process will play a crucial role in determining the future use of the newly acquired property.

To engage with the Stoney Point Community Park visioning process, residents and interested individuals can visit Lakeshore.ca/SPPark. Here, they can access background information, sign up for project updates, and participate in the public open house and online survey scheduled for the fall.

The Municipality of Lakeshore’s acquisition of the former Stoney Point Tavern property marks an important milestone in the development of Stoney Point Community Park. By actively involving residents in the visioning process, the municipality aims to create a park that truly reflects the needs and desires of the community. With the support and input of its residents, Lakeshore is building a vibrant and inclusive space for all to enjoy.
