Soccer Fans Detained Pending Trial in Fatal Clash that Canceled Champions League Qualifier
All 105 soccer fans suspected of involvement in a deadly clash in the Greek capital have been ordered to be detained pending their trial, according to authorities. The extensive clashes resulted in the death of a 29-year-old AEK Athens supporter. Three examining magistrates and two prosecutors have questioned the detained fans and decided to detain them pending trial. The suspects, consisting of 102 Croat citizens and 3 Greeks, have denied any culpability in the fatal stabbing that occurred during the clashes.
The incident took place when scores of Croatian supporters, armed with wooden clubs and metal bats, attacked bystanders outside AEK’s Opap Arena. The violence resulted in the death of one person and the injury of 10 others. The repercussions were significant, as the Champions League qualifier match between AEK and Dinamo Zagreb had to be called off by UEFA. Authorities are now investigating cellphone signals at the sites of the clashes to determine if any other individuals were involved.
Prosecutors have leveled charges against all 105 fans involved.
