Italy Secures 5th Consecutive Win, Dominating Puerto Rico 98-65 in Gigi Datome’s Farewell Match
Italy’s journey towards the 2023 FIBA World Cup continues on a positive note as they secured their 5th consecutive victory in preparation games. Dominating Puerto Rico with a final score of 98-65, Italy showcased their prowess on the court. This game also marked the farewell match for 35-year-old Gigi Datome, as he bid a fond farewell to Italian basketball.
Under the guidance of coach Gianmarco Pozzecco, Italy’s Simone Fontecchio led the team with an impressive 16 points in just under 17 minutes of play at the Pala De André. Matteo Spagnolo also made a tremendous impact with 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Another standout player was Gabriele Procida, who recently joined ALBA Berlin, contributing 16 points, 3 assists, and 4 steals. Gigi Datome concluded his last-ever game on Italian soil with a solid 5 points.
On the Puerto Rican side, 26-year-old Ethan Thompson shone brightly, scoring 14 points while playing alongside his brother Stephen, who finished with 10 points. Despite their efforts, Puerto Rico fell short in the face of Italy’s dominant performance. Ismael Romero managed to make an impact as well, with 6 points and 5 rebounds.
Before the friendly game, the president of the Italian basketball federation, Gianni Petrucci, and Nicolò Melli, Datome’s beloved teammate in Milan, paid tribute to the veteran player. Datome is set to compete in his last-ever basketball tournament, the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
Looking ahead, the Italian national team, coached by Gianmarco Pozzecco, will face Angola, the Dominican Republic, and the host country, the Philippines, in Group A at the upcoming World Cup held in Manila. The first game of the tournament will see Italy take on the Angolan national team. On the other hand, Puerto Rico will be pitted against Serbia, China, and South Sudan in Group B.
