A three-train collision in India has left at least 288 people dead and more than 850 injured, making it the country’s deadliest rail accident in over 20 years. The collision took place near Balasore in the eastern state of Odisha, with images from the crash site showing smashed train compartments with blood-stained holes and carriages flipped sideways. Rescue workers searched for survivors trapped in the wreckage, while scores of bodies were lined up beside the tracks. India has experienced a number of railway accidents, with deaths sometimes numbering in the hundreds. The 1981 Bihar disaster saw a train derail while crossing a bridge and plunge into the river below, killing between 800 and 1,000 people.
