China’s Village Super League Ignites National Football Tournament, Inviting 30 Teams for Historic Season
China’s Village Super League (VSL), also known as Cun Chao by netizens, has launched a national football tournament in Rongjiang County, Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province. The tournament, which attracted a staggering 798 team applications, has selected 30 teams to participate in its inaugural season, set to run until October 28. The organizing committee has also revealed plans for future seasons, demonstrating the long-term vision of the VSL.
To kick off the event, an all-star team from Hong Kong, including actor Law Kar-Ying, played the opening match among the four matches scheduled for the day. Law expressed his hopes that through this friendly competition, more Chinese people would develop an interest in football.
The VSL, which commenced on May 13 and concluded on July 29, gained immense popularity, garnering over 30 billion clicks during the entire tournament. The competition, organized by local Rongjiang villagers, featured 20 teams consisting of amateur players from nearby villages. Its down-to-earth nature even attracted attention from former England football star Michael Owen, who sent his congratulations via an online video.
Previously, County Chief Xu Bo announced that Rongjiang would host a national football competition following the VSL season.
