A tragic train accident in India’s Odisha state claimed the lives of 233 people and left an additional 900 injured. The deadly collision occurred when two passenger trains, the Howrah Superfast Express and Coromandel Express, crashed in Balasore district, making it the country’s deadliest train accident in over a decade. The death toll is expected to rise as authorities are offering conflicting accounts as to which train derailed first, with reports suggesting a freight train may have been involved. An extensive search-and-rescue operation is underway with hundreds of emergency personnel and sniffer dogs involved in the effort. As India’s railway network transports over 13 million passengers daily, the state-run monopoly has faced criticism for its substandard safety record due to ageing infrastructure.
